1. Sleep Apnea
It happens when something blocks your airway while sleeping. Your organs will work harder to open this and put air into the lungs. You may even stop breathing for a while. Hence, it may lower the flow of oxygen to your organs and cause irregular heart rhythms. As a result, you may snort, jerk, or gasp loudly. Most of the time, you will not have any idea about what’s happening.
You will have trouble falling asleep because the muscles that manage your airway relaxes too much. Also, it narrows your throat. Other objects may even block it. It is the result of too much fat, swollen tonsils, and other health problems. However, it is usually common among older males. Having a thick neck and a large tongue also increases the risk of it.
Having trouble sleeping is perhaps most often associated with this. If you have this, you may also have difficulty staying asleep. This condition may be short-term or may last a long time. The acute type will last from a night to a few weeks. Chronic happens at least three nights a week for more than three months.
The most common cause is stress. It may also be the result of room factors like noise, temperature, and light. Other health issues that can lead to this are depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and asthma. Certain medicines for colds and allergies may also increase the risk of it. A lifestyle that includes regular drinking and smoking may lead to insomnia. It is more common among women and older people.
If the former is having trouble sleeping, this condition is the opposite. You will have trouble staying awake during the day. You may experience sudden sleep at any time. Therefore, it can result in a lack of energy and inability to concentrate. This can be cured with medicine. The type will depend on what causes your sleeping problem.
Moreover, it is an umbrella term for different disorders that can happen just before sleeping while sleeping, and as you wake up. These include nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, cramps, teeth grinding, and bedwetting. Nightmares are dreams that can cause fear. Because of this, they may wake you suddenly, resulting in difficulty going back to sleep. Night terrors are like nightmares that happen during deep sleep.
Sleepwalking happens when you move around even if you are not awake. Sleep talking is a sleep transition disorder. However, it is not dangerous on its own. It can disturb other people who are near you. Leg cramps may also appear at night. These are muscle contractions that happen during rest time.
While sleepwalking involves movement while sleeping, sleep paralysis is difficulty in moving or waking up while sleeping. Also, teeth grinding is when you clench your teeth during sleep. Lastly, bedwetting happens when you can’t control your bladder when you are sleeping.
This sleeping disorder affects your ability to sleep and wake up. You may experience too much sleepiness during the daytime. You will suddenly fall asleep even in the middle of an activity. The usual sleep cycle consists of early stages, deeper stages, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. If you have this, you will instantly go to REM sleep, even when you are still awake.
It has two types. Type 1 comes with the sudden loss of muscle tone. This results in weakness and an inability to control muscles. Type 2 does not come with this. Specialists still haven’t come up with a cause for this. They believe it comes from different causes. It may be linked to other health problems.
6. Shift Work Sleep Disorder
Unlike other sleeping problems, which may result from other health conditions, this problem is the result of your working conditions. Additionally, it is common stressful work shifts, like in call centers or hospitals. You will have difficulty staying awake during your working hours.
