Menstruation happen among women as it goes through changes in the body. In usual cases, it lasts for 2 to 8 days. Hence, a typical period occurs every 4 to 5 weeks. But some women do not have this usual time range of period.
1. Changes in Body’s Level of Hormones
Changes in the level of women’s sex hormones may disrupt the pattern of the period. For instance, these hormones are estrogen and progesterone. They help to control the cycle of the period.
2. Using Birth Control Methods
Some women use birth control methods like the intrauterine device (IUD). Therefore, such an approach may cause the period to vary. IUD is a T-shaped device. Doctors put it in the uterus. To do so, they insert it in the vagina first. Also, this device may cause heavy or varying bleeding.
If you take pills for birth control, you may have spotted them in the first month of your intake. This sign is more common if you take the ‘mini-pill.’ Aside from the bleeding, others may miss their periods.
3. Too Much Exercise but Low Energy
Exercise does not cause irregular periods. The cause is behind the low energy you have. Therefore, it happens when the energy you have is lesser than the energy you use. Such practice will change a woman’s cycle.
Having low energy may occur due to changes or limits in diet, stress, and exercise. Likewise, it may be due to the mix of these three.
4. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Moreover, it is a common health issue among women. It is due to the hormonal imbalance that leads to problems in the ovary. This issue in the hormone may cause period cramps. Also, women with PCOS miss periods or have fewer periods in a year. In some cases, women stop having their menstruation due to this problem.
5. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Women who are pregnant will no longer have a period until they give birth. If you do breastfeed, the return of the period may vary. Likewise, some moms feed their babies with breastmilk alone (without food or drinks). They may not have a period until they stop doing it. Additionally, spotting or bleeding is common for mom-to-be.
Stress causes the period to occur late. The body tries to calm itself by stopping ovulation. If there is a lack in the ovaries’ release of eggs, it will delay menstruation.
7. Too Much or Too Few Thyroid Hormone
Overactive thyroid and underactive thyroid affect periods. Hence, the thyroid helps to control activities in the body like the menstrual cycle. Too much or too little of it may result in very heavy, light, or irregular periods. Thyroid disease can stop a period for months or longer.
8. Polyps or Too Thick Uterine Lining
Polyps may entail heavy bleeding during a period. Likewise, it may also include spotting after sex. There are cases where the lining of the uterus grows too thick. As a result, you may have heavy and long periods or not have one at all.
9. Uterine Fibroids
This benign tumor grows in the wall of the womb. It occurs during the childbearing years. Women who have this condition show symptoms. Their periods last longer than a week. The bleeding is heavy. Aside from that, you may also have period cramps.
If you have a heavy and painful period, go and talk to a doctor. However, beware of spotting or bleeding during the period. Tell him or her about the signs. By doing so, he or she will know if you have a severe health problem.
10. Change in Time of Period
You may have irregular periods if the date starts to change. Women with this condition cannot think or guess when they are about to have it. The normal gap between periods is 21 to 35 days.
See how much blood you lose. Is it too many or too little? Notice how many pads you use due to bleeding. Heavy bleeding for a woman may be normal for another. In most cases, women will lose less than 80ml (16 tsp.) of blood during their period.
If you are giving off too much blood, beware of anemia. If you have this condition, you have low blood and will get tired fast.
12. How Long
If the days of your period vary a lot, it may be a sign of irregular periods. A normal cycle length is about 2 to 7 days.
Women’s period is a vital sign of what is going on in their bodies. It can also be a sign of long-term health problems. Go to a doctor if you have these signs. By doing so, the doctor will see if you have other health issues. You can see that most of the causes come from the body itself.
If you have period cramps, do something to feel better. Take a warm bath. Put a warm pad on your lower belly or lower back. Do yoga, walk, or swim to help in the blood flow. If you can’t bear the pain, you can ask a doctor for pain killers.
Take care of your body and mind. Try new things to release stress and fuel your body with healthy foods. It is okay to exercise. However, make sure that you are not stressing yourself.
