People who are suffering from depression are like living in a “black hole”. There are some physical symptoms of depression such as weight changes, and you may look older than your age. These physical symptoms are caused by over-thinking, sleep changes, loss of energy, anger or irritability, and self-loathing.
Depression can experience by men, women, teens, and older adults. However, the symptoms may vary according to age and gender. Depressed men experienced symptoms like reckless behavior, anger, aggression, and substance abused. For women, most of the time overeat, sleep for long hours, have a guilt feeling, and weight gain. Women may also experience depression during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopausal period.
Sad symptoms in teens are common nowadays. Some symptoms in teens are irritability, anger, and the most noticeable is the agitation. Even older adults can experience depression, and symptoms are usually physical rather than emotional signs such as memory problems, fatigue, and unexplainable aches and pain.
There are many types of depression, and it depends on the severity of depression-like mild, moderate, or severe. Mild and moderate is the commonly known types of depression. People with mild depression may feel blue, it can also affect their daily life, and it can take away motivation and an overall feeling of contentment. Unlike mild and moderate depression, severe depression is not common and it is characterized by severe relentless symptoms. Severe depression can last for about six months and it can be a recurring disorder.
SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a reduced daylight hours’ winter that can lead to depression. Sad symptoms are stressed, no interest in friends or activities, hopeless and tense.
1. Lack of Interest
One of the common signs of depression is a lack of interest. A lack of interest in doing activities or things that you usually love doing is already a sign. It can take the enjoyment or pleasure for the things that you love to do. For example, waking up and staying in bed for long hours without doing anything. Staying in bed is the only option that you have. Another symptom is losing interest in sex. It can decrease sex drive and impotence.
2. Increased Fatigue and Sleep Problems
Physically drained, sluggish, and fatigue is common signs of depression. Feeling tired and fatigue is the reason why do you have the energy to do anything. It comes with a lack of energy which can be the most exhausting symptoms of depression. Insomnia is another sign of depression. Overthinking because of the depression may lead to insomnia.
3. Irritability in Men
One of the signs of depression especially in men is irritability. Depressed men usually feel this symptom, aside from that they can also experience anger, reckless behavior, and aggression. According to research, men with depression have short temper and they are irritable at all times.
According to psychologists, anxiety is a normal feeling for humans. No study or research has proven that one of the signs of depression is anxiety. However, these two can both occur at the same time. Some symptoms of anxiety are a feeling of danger or panic, nervousness, restlessness, rapid heart rate, heavy sweating, and many more.
5. Appetite or Weight Changes
Extreme urge to eat or weight changes can be physical symptoms of depression. People with depression eat a lot and results to weigh. It can be different for each person. Other people will have an increased appetite and gain weight while others won’t be hungry and may lead to losing weight.
6. Feelings of Helplessness
One of the sad symptoms is feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. These signs may lead to severe depression that can affect the way you feel about life in general. Other signs are self-hate, inappropriate guilt, and worthlessness.
7. Uncontrolled Emotions
Emotions of depressed people are up and down’s. You have an outburst of sudden anger and the need to cry uncontrollably. Signs of depression are uncontrolled emotions. It can also cause mood swings.
8. Concentration Problems
Signs of depression are the inability to concentrate or focus on the things that want to do. You can experience trouble in focusing, and it is hard to make a decision or sometimes difficulty in remembering things. It is very hard for people experiencing depression, but they can always seek professional help to overcome this mental condition.
