It can happen especially if the bad smell is caused by a health condition and not just some food particles trapped within teeth. The odor will not disappear even after brushing the teeth and the use of mouthwash.
1. Poor Dental Health
Food particles that are left inside the mouth or in between teeth are broken down by bacteria. The combination of both bacteria and decaying food can cause bad smell coming out inside the mouth. It is recommended by dentists to practice frequent brushing and flossing to eliminate trapped small food particles before it decays.
Halitosis is caused by the sticky substance that forms around the teeth and can cause smelly mouth. It is due to the formation of plaque in teeth. Aside from that, plaque can promote the production of cavities and leads to periodontal disease. People with dentures must clean it regularly to avoid bad smell coming from it.
2. Smelly Foods and Drinks
There are certain foods with very strong flavor such as onion, garlic, and many others that when ingested the oil from these foods is absorbed by the stomach and carries through the bloodstream and goes to the lungs. It is through the lungs that the bad odor is released through your breath. Some of these strong odors can even last for 72 hours. Also, drinking beverages with strong flavor like coffee are known causes of bad breath.
