Acne scar removal can be either done at home or through medical treatments. Home remedies for acne scar removal can be bought over the counter such as salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, and lactic acids. There are also natural remedies to clear up acne scars such as coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera gel, raw honey, baking soda, and lemon juice. These are traditional home remedies used to treat acne scars. For a severe case of acne, medical treatment is recommended. Medical treatment is done by a licensed dermatologist with different procedures depending on a person’s skin type. Some examples of medical treatments are chemical peels, injections, derma filler, microneedling, and laser treatments.

      1. Using Salicylic Acid

It is the most common acne scar removal solution that one can easily do at home. Salicylic acid is usually an ingredient in many acne skincare products and it helps to clear the pores from dirt and other debris that leads to acne. It can be used as a daily skincare routine to get rid of acne scars. It is recommended for those people with sensitive skin. One can apply a small portion of salicylic acid in a small area of skin before using it. This is called a skin test to avoid allergic reactions.

      2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha Hydroxy Acids or AHAs is a type of acne scar removal that removes dead skin cells and prevent clogged pores. It is recommended by doctors to reduce the appearance of acne scars because it is a mild form of acid that scrapes away the outer layer of skin to reveal fresh and new skin.

      3. Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is also used to get rid of acne scars. It lightens dark marks and gently peels the outer layer of the skin to prevent dead skin cells. Aside from lactic acid some products also contain lactic acid like diluted apple cider vinegar. It is recommended to test it on a small portion of your skin to check for possible irritation.

      4. Chemical Peels

This treatment is only done by a licensed dermatologist and they will recommend the right type of chemical that is suitable for your skin type, acne severity, and scarring. This type of acne scar removal may be less effective. People may need to try different types of peel to check which chemical is the best suitable for them.

      5. Dermal Filler

This is a new procedure that can get rid of the acne scars using a soft tissue filler to reduce the appearance of scars. It is done by a dermatologist and the filler that is used is consists of collagen-based products. Other than soft tissue filler they can also remove fat from another part of the body as an alternative. This procedure will last only between 6 and 18 months and it is commonly used for atrophic scars.

      6. Microneedling

Microneedling is a type of acne scar removal that uses tiny needles inserted into the skin surrounding the scar. It stimulates the body to make more collagen that can reduce the appearance of deep scars. The only downside of microneedling treatment is inflammation, redness, and slight pain, but these side effects are just temporary.

      7. Laser Treatment

This kind of acne scar removal is one of the most effective methods without the use of any chemical and painless. It uses a laser device to remove the uppermost layer of the skin to reveal younger skin cells underneath. However, It is not appropriate for everyone because it can cause a reaction in some people especially for those people with sensitive skin.
