Epilepsy is the common name. It is for a brain problem that causes seizures. The attack is not related to high fever. One symptom of epilepsy is a myoclonic seizure. Doctors usually identify it as epilepsy after two or more attacks. This condition shows muscles moving uncontrollably. It can happen to a person who is awake. Also, it comes with short, tight, and loose muscles. This symptom can last for just a second or longer.
A person who has epilepsy will experience an attack. It is the abnormal movement of the body and can happen at the same time. However, it can happen only once or may stop and repeat. Also, people without epilepsy can experience myoclonic seizures. For instance, hiccups or sudden shaking during sleep are some. These experiences are just normal.
Epilepsy may come from different health problems like head injuries. Most of the time, the source is tough to find out. However, some cases have other serious illnesses. This health problem can affect people in different ways. There are many causes and types of attacks. This information makes it hard for doctors to know the real condition of a person. Also, the seriousness and how it affects the life of a person is another issue.
This type of attack starts from two parts of the brain. This form has two types of attacks. For instance, generalized motor attacks and absence are some. It is serious and tough to control. It may cause loss of consciousness and twitching of the muscles.
On the other hand, an absence attack is less serious. It will not cause injury and only make a person unaware of the surroundings. A person can go back to consciousness in a few seconds. This attack means that the person is absentminded. It comes with repeat movement like fast blinking.
This type happens from one part of the brain. Also, it has different forms. One is an aware focal attack. The person knows that the attacks are about to happen. In contrast, focal complex partial seizures can happen while the person is awake. The person experiences confusion and does not remember what happens.
A person who is about to experience an attack can show motor signs. For instance, one can show lip biting and chewing. Also, some may do a very loud scream or cry.
Some signs are not clear. For instance, a person can experience a different feeling in the stomach. Also, the sense of taste and smell is affected. Some people feel fear or joy. There is also a feeling of tingling in some parts of the body. In the eye, some may see light or color.
A complex partial seizure happens to a larger part of the brain. It can lead to the person not hearing any sound. The person will also not reply when you start talking to them. After the attack, a person may experience confusion for a few moments. Even one does not know whether it already stop. The person may feel tired and like to relax after it.
Another type is the focal motor. This form happens with contractions, trembles, and some movements. On the other hand, focal non-motor does not cause motions. Rather, it affects the persons’ emotions and thoughts. For instance, one may feel serious and weird feelings, a fast pulse rate, and a hot or cold blow.
3. Generalized and Focal
It is a combination of the two types of epilepsy. In this kind of attack, a person experiences signs of both. Besides, one can also suffer from symptoms.
This type of attack can come from family history. However, only a few are related to a member of the family with a similar health problem. Family with this background has a higher chance for children to develop the same problem. The seriousness of the condition may vary from one person to another.
People with a family background are more prone to acquire the condition. It can happen if they are alcoholics. Also, poor sleeping habit is another cause. Lack of enough sleep is bad for a person showing signs of attack.
There are different types of epilepsy in children. These are childhood absence and juvenile absence. With children, it can show signs of staring blankly. It can happen between four to six years old. With juvenile, it can start late and can happen until old age. Also, the use of the gadget in children with epilepsy can make it worse.
4. Unknown Attack
There are many types of epilepsy. Furthermore, in some cases, it is very hard to know the cause. Even doctors sometimes are having a hard time. It is possible when the person is alone when the attack happens. Because there is no one else who observes while it happens, a doctor can see the attack as “unknown.” It is due to unclear medical results from tests.
