16 Things that Can Trigger a Focal Seizure

A focal seizure occurs due to the brain’s unusual rush of electrical signals. Individuals can experience bodily indications prior, during, and after the seizure attack that is often temporary, lasting a few seconds to minutes. A focal seizure can root from a single portion of the brain, compared with generalized seizures that stem from across the organ’s regions. Indications of focal seizures usually occur in half of one’s body. These include muscular spasms, unusual bodily feelings, unusual bobbing of the head, repeated gestures, and abnormal vision.

      Definition

A focal seizure is classified into a focal aware seizure, and focal impaired awareness seizure wherein focal aware or simple focal seizures occur with the individual’s knowledge. They know that the episode occurred, and they remember. This seizure can endure for a few seconds. In contrast, focal impaired awareness seizure happens without the individual’s knowledge. They do not have a memory of their occurrence at all. The episode can endure for longer than sixty seconds.

This article explains the possible causes of a focal seizure. If someone is diagnosed with a medical problem that brings about seizures, avoiding these triggers can help manage the symptoms. A few lifestyle changes can lead to a happier and healthier life.

      1. Liquor

Certain routines, like excessive alcohol intake, can trigger several seizure attacks. Beverages that contain alcohol like vodka, wine, cider, and beer can impact the brain’s actions. Alcohol consumption, particularly in a very high amount, interferes with the brain’s normal actions, leading to convulsions.

      2. Caffeine

Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are some caffeinated drinks that people enjoy. Caffeine, a chemical, and stimulant are present in various food products. Just like alcohol, this substance can modify the brain’s electrical activity resulting in a seizure, but it does not mean one should refrain from drinking or eating food with caffeine. Limiting the intake each day is enough to prohibit potential seizure attacks.

      3. Nicotine

The stimulant nicotine present in tobacco puts one in a greater probability of having seizures. One can minimize the risk of attacks by reducing the consumption amount, if not halting altogether.

      4. Drugs

Substance use and abuse may lead to several types of seizures, like absence seizure. Likewise, prescription drugs can elevate the possibility of seizures. On a few occasions, substance withdrawal triggers an attack.

      5. Sleep

Not getting enough sleep can cause distress for one’s brain and heighten the chance of seizure. Getting enough sleep is extremely important for optimum health.

      6. Stress

Extreme stress takes its toll on one’s body and maximizes the tendency of seizure. Minimizing stress is beneficial for overall health.

      7. Environment

Specific optical stimuli can cause seizures. A seizure can happen during TV viewing, phone gaming, or internet browsing. However, beaming lights have a greater chance of triggering generalized seizures that focal seizures.

      8. Serious trauma to the head

Damage to one’s physique, especially the head and neck, can lead to every type of seizure-like absence seizure. Seizures can start right away following severe trauma or manifest later on in life.

      9. Fetal Brain Damage

Damage to one’s head obtained before birth or during delivery can bring about a seizure. Some fetal aspects like lack of oxygen and malnutrition can impact the chance of seizures, too.

      10. Brain tumor

On unusual occasions, a tumor of the brain is seen as the trigger to seizure.

      11. Developmental Disorders

Specific conditions like autism spectrum disorder are linked to an increased chance of experiencing attacks.

      12. Brain Deterioration

Some progressive conditions like dementia can maximize the tendency to have a seizure.

      13. Vascular Illnesses

Stroke and extreme hypertension can lead to a seizure. Diet and routines that are good for the heart, along with your doctor’s advice, can lead to a minimized chance of attack.

      14. Low Blood Sugar Levels

A fall in one’s blood sugar level can cause seizures, especially to people with medical conditions like diabetes. Adhering to your healthcare provider’s medical intervention can minimize your risk of seizure and other symptom attacks.

      15. Infections

Illnesses rooted from an infection like influenza, meningitis, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome can trigger seizures. A raging fever can cause convulsions, too.

      16. Substance Withdrawal

Putting a stop to the consumption of specific drugs like analgesics and sedatives can result in seizures.
